The mission of the Institute is to create more dialogue for seminarians, priests and religious to understand the Eastern Churches more so as to be able to reunite the Churches.
Our jurisdiction was established by Joseph Cardinal Slipyj with the cooperation of Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarch Maximos V Hakim as a union of Ukrainian Orthodox and Ukrainian Catholic Bishops. It was established to work towards one united Ukrainian jurisdiction as a bridge between East and West.
The Jurisdiction expanded from Cardinal Slipyj to Archbishop +Amvrosij to focus on helping the West understand the richness of the East. Cardinal Slipyj had a strategy that a bi-ritual jurisdiction would be a way to navigate through the challenges that the East and West have and to work to bringing the two together. As we know, the Church is not divided (the Body of Christ is One), the dialogue of disunity needs to continue and be resolved.
The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and St. Basil go back centuries and we also offer the Liturgy of St. Gregory, Pope of Rome. We also study all the ancient Eastern Liturgies...including the first Liturgy of St. James, Brother of the Lord and first Bishop of Jerusalem. The Eastern Catholic Churches continue to offer these liturgies which continue to attract traditional and orthodox Catholics.
The program is to teach seminarians and clergy members the history of the Divine Liturgy, how to properly say it, and all of the rituals that go with the Divine Liturgy. We teach students how to make the prosphora (bread for communion) and explain the vestments and sacred vessels that accompany any of the Eastern rites.
Archbishop Metropolitan +Amvrosij, an Athonite Schema Archimandrite, is giving a homily at Monte Christo speaking about how essential it is for people to understand the fullness of the faith. The world is very attractive and to be a faith-filled follower of Jesus Christ we have to follow the dogmas and doctrine of the Church.
We have a course on preaching and teach seminarians and priests the art of preaching. One of the most powerful things we can teach others is how to preach well.
Jesus said, "For unless a man is born again of water and the Holy Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God' (John 3:5)."

The Institute for Eastern Christian Studies provides dialogue and does not necessarily represent the position of each faculty member. We are creating conversation to look at some of the challenges that the Church has at this time.
